Speed drop?

Recommended Posts

Hello folks, a few months back I was delighted to see my speed had increased from about 80mbps average to north of 140mbps. However in the last month or so I have been reduced to less than 30mbps on average. I have tried all the usual to "correct"  the issue to no avail. The app will on occasion say I have obstructions every 10 seconds when my dish is on top of a second story roof with 100% view of the open sky.

I've even ordered a new router to replace my old Asus RT-N56U. My main computer is hardwired thru an LGS1082 8 port switch to the router. I feed a linksys velop triband mesh network for wifi over the 3 acre property off the switch. and the new router coming to replace the N56U is a gt-ax11000.

Just wondering if my issue is simply congestion from my area given the number of new starlinks i see at customer homes.

isn't starlink service supposed to be some stated minimum? I don't remember, but thought it was 50+ mbps.  FWIW, got the router swapped out today and managing 48mbps instead of 27. Better, but way worse than 140-150 and yet way better than my previous ISP's 12.

Actually, Starlink does not guarantee any particular speed. See https://www.starlink.com/legal/documents/DOC-1002-69942-69?regionCode=US. Speeds will vary dramatically depending on your location, network congestion, and sometimes the weather.

But, expected is supposed to be 50-200mbps according to that page. I'm not in a wait list area either, so the best effort I would assume doesn't apply.

@Lothos,

Once again, please, see the Starlink Service Description. The paragraph immediately following the table states:

Quote

Stated speeds and uninterrupted use of Services are not guaranteed. Actual speeds will likely be lower than the maximum speeds during times of high usage. Starlink may temporarily reduce speeds if our network is congested.

Also, the last section entitled GENERAL EXCLUSIONS explains the many, many factors that may affect transfer speeds. One of the primary factors is congestion as you suspected.

Lastly, Best Efforts may or may not apply depending on what plan you are on, whether you are at your Service Address and even when you signed up for service.

FWIW, I track my transfer speeds very carefully. I sometimes get 50-150Mbps, but frankly, more often than not, my transfer speeds are somewhere around 15-50Mbps. On occasion, the speed drops below 10Mbps and, sometimes, even below 1Mbps.
