Starlink stopped working

Recommended Posts

Starlink (gen 2)stopped working 2 days ago.

It was working in the morning but when we plugged it back in that after noon it did its positioning thing and then stopped working.

We eventually did a factory reset. We reconfigured the SSID and password, but can't connect to the dish.

Router says starlink unplugged or rebooting. Debug data says router is ok, but starlink is disconnected. We triple checked the cable, and re-seated it both on the router and the dish many times, but still nothing. Two tickets submitted to starlink but no response.

Not sure how to diagnose at this point. ANY help would be appreciated

Best after power up, first wait a minute, then restart the router via the app on the mobile. Maybe the router will see the disk then.

I had sometimes the same problem after power failure, but now I have a UPS.

Keep the router and disk always powered.

  • Above, @RDW said "disk", but I believe he/she intended to say "dish"
  • Putting your Starlink system on a UPS (battery back-up) is ALWAYS a good idea. Get a cheap one at your favorite big box store (Walmart? Costco? Sam's Club? Best Buy? etc...)
  • I agree that the Starlink Router and Dishy should always be powered on. Updates happen... regularly. If you turn your system off, you could be facing a long delay due to several updates being applied on the next power-up.

When it is not getting a position, try first to stow the disk via the app and after one minute to unstow again.

But not directly reset every think, because now you can not do it anymore.

  • I'm not sure about stowing and unstowing the Dishy using the app. You also have the option to reboot only the Dishy using the app. I'd try that instead...

Long story short, your Router and/or Dishy ma ybe in the midst of  one or more software updates... This can take a while (up to several hours), particularly if the system has been powered off for a while and there are multiple updates to be processed.  I try to avoid turning off the power on my Starlink Router & Dishy. If I MUST cycle the power, I prefer to do that in the late night or early morning hours (12AM-4AM), if at all possible.

My advice...

  • Don't turn the antenna/router off for long periods of time. Apparently, this can REALLY elongate the time required for the update process on power-up.
  • If you have issues after powering up the Starlink Router / Dishy, leave it alone for 12-24 hours. Give it some time to update everything and get settled in. You can check it every hour, if you want and it might be ready to go in 30 minutes or 1 hour... or 3-4 hours. Once everything is connected and stable (i.e., you can connect to the Internet), all should be well.
