splicing cable
RicochetStarlink replied to John Larson's topic in Starlink Troubleshooting & Questions
Why not just buy a longer cable from the Starlink Shop? Splicing cables is dicey business and you won’t get any help from Starlink to resolve your issues. Seems like the money spent would be well worth it to recoup your time and aggravation over this. -
Extending coverage to my shop 500ft. from my home.
RicochetStarlink replied to Rob B.'s topic in Extending WiFi Coverage
@Rob B., Ethernet cables are limited to 100m (~300ft) in length or less (see https://www.howtogeek.com/813419/how-long-can-an-ethernet-cable-be/). The longer the cable gets, the more likely you are to have some type of signal interference from other sources. Now, if you run a 100m cable to an Ethernet switch, you can plug in another 100m cable giving 200m (~600ft). However, that means you need a standard power outlet for the switch. This all becomes problematic in a hurry. The Starlink Mesh Routers cannot be connected using an Ethernet cable. They connected wirelessly over the WiFi signal. However, it's unlikely that you could get two mesh routers to connect if they are 500ft apart. Another alternative would be to use a device like the Unify U6 Long-Range Access Point -- which can send a signal up to 2,000 ft and retails for $179 -- to send a wireless signal from your home to the shop. This would be connected by an Ethernet cable to the Starlink Ethernet Adapter on your primary router. It is powered by POE (Power Over Ethernet) and uses a power injector that plugs into the cable between your Starlink Router and the U6. You'll need two standard Ethernet cables -- one from the Starlink to the injector and another from the injector to the U6. The injector will need to be within a few feet of a standard power outlet. Ubiquity Networks has other more powerful options including matching point-to-point wireless antennas such as their Building Bridge that could be used. However, you will need two devices (i.e., one at each end of the 500ft run), they cost more ($499/ea retail), each devices needs a standard power outlet and you'll also need an Access Point at the shop. This kind of solution gets pretty pricey (e.g., approaching $1,500) and is likely far more power than you will need. There are other vendors out there than can provide similar equipment. However, I have had good luck with Ubiquiti's devices and they tend to be more affordable. Hope this helps. -

@Roger Duffell, I thought Starlink Business was &250/month, not $2,500. $2,500 is the one time purchase price for the High Performance Kit required for Starlink Business. You might try using a Starlink-compatible VPN. The link at the top of the forum will take you to the PureVPN web site. I have not tried PureVPN. I can tell you that ProtonVPN works with Starlink… up to a point, but I don’t know if it supports your use case.

Isle of Man and the rural discount
RicochetStarlink replied to ChrisHall's topic in General Starlink
@ChrisHall, Your question should be redirected to Starlink. If you are not a customer, the only known contact point for Starlink is through the email address starlinkresolutions@spacex.com. Hope that helps. -
@Rgevans and @Lost1wing, I agree. The 150' cable is no longer in the Starlink Store. However, I did find something very interesting. There are two new cables for the High Performance antenna that have an RJ-45 (Ethernet) connector on the router end of the cable. One of the cables is 5m (16.4ft) long. The other is 30m (98ft) long. In both cases, the description says that the cable is intended to be used when additional length is needed between the Starlink Dishy and a third-party router. This implies that the High Performance antenna has it's own power supply and is NOT powered by the Starlink Router. The great news here is that the Ethernet connector opens up a world of possibilities. I wonder if it would be possible to use a waterproof inline Ether connector (e.g., Lonlonty Waterproof Shielded RJ45 Coupler IP68,CAT6A/CAT6/CAT5E/CAT5 Female to Female Coupler Connector Shielded for Outdoor Ethernet LAN Cable-2 Pack) to extend the cable using another Ethernet cable of the appropriate length. Note that there is a maximum length for an Ethernet cable depending on which type of cable you use (i.e., CAT5, CAT5E, CAT6, or CAT6A). I don't know those maximums off the top of my head and using an inline connector probably reduces the maximum cable length somewhat. The downside of this approach is that you'll need a third-part router once you get to the end of your (extended) cable since it won't plug into the Starlink Router. Not sure if these helps, but seemed like it might be relevant.

@TonyH, When you click "buy", one of two things will happen. Starlink will take your order, charge your card, and your system will be shipped within a week or two (my personal experience). It will arrive, you'll set it up and you'll be on your way with Starlink. Starlink will offer you the change to make a reservation (i.e., "get in line"). If you accept, your card will be charged the reservation fee ($99 in the US, not sure about France). Some period of time will go buy (days? weeks? maybe a year or more?) and Starlink will email you to tell you that they are ready to take your order. If you place the order, your reservation fee will be applied to the price of the kit. From there, go back to #1. Hope that helps.

@Lost1wing, I'm not sure what you mean by "protected"... The devices on the Ethernet port will be "behind" the Starlink Router, but (obviously/) you will need a switch to connect multiple device to the Ethernet port. Personally, my experience has been that the Starlink WiFi is much faster and more stable than the Ethernet port. I know that's exactly the opposite of what you'd expect, but that has proven out in my experience.

Extreme slow speed
RicochetStarlink replied to Shifting Backyard's topic in Starlink Troubleshooting & Questions
@Shifting Backyard, I wish I had something helpful to say here. I'm really sorry for and appalled by your experience with Starlink. I don't know what I'd do in a situation like this. I work remotely and depend on my Starlink Internet connection for my livelihood. If nothing else, know that your posts are being seen and heard here. I know that is little comfort, but I'm not sure what else to offer you. -

RicochetStarlink replied to gschuitt's topic in Starlink Troubleshooting & Questions
@gschuitt, Starlink Forums is not directly associated with Starlink. We are a community of customers who share information and assist one another in solving problems related to Starlink based upon our experience. you will need to reach out to Starlink support through a support ticket or via email. if you search the forums, there is a HOWTO article for contacting Starlink Support. If you’d like I can send you a link to that article. I’m on my phone at the moment and don’t have the link handy. hope that helps. -
Regardless of your ISP (Internet Service Provider), if you are assigned an IP address that is located in Mexico, most online services will default to Spanish. Changing the IP address assigned by your ISP is simply not possible. A VPN might help with this, but I am not aware of a VPN provider that supports Smart TVs -- unless you install the VPN on your router. That is all doable given enough time and expertise. You need to be really comfortable with advanced networking configuration. That being said, I am not the guy to walk you through setting up a router-based VPN. It's something I've considered, but never done. Lastly, call HughesNet / Mx support and see if they can help you. They deal with more customers than your installer.

HOWTO/GUIDE: Factory Reset Starlink
RicochetStarlink replied to StarlinkLeader's topic in Starlink Howto's
@Mike Gilchrist, Rebooting the router should not require access to the dish as it does not involve downloading anything -- at least not initially. If Dishy is plugged into the router, then resetting the router will also reset the antenna. -
You will likely experience slower speeds during "Prime Time" which is the evening hours in most regions. Why? Because everybody in the world sits down after work to stream video from their favorite streaming service(s) and it just hammers the networks of most ISPs. As for downloading updates, those can take a while. It appears that Starlink treats these downloads as non-priority traffic most of the time. So, when the prime time flood of streaming traffic starts, there's not much left over for non-priority traffic. Hope that helps.

CGNAT related issues
RicochetStarlink replied to PhilW's topic in Starlink Troubleshooting & Questions
While connected to your Starlink network, point your browser to https://www.infobyip.com/ and see what it says. This provides information specific to the exact IP address that you have been assigned by Starlink. That being said... While it appears that Starlink has several ground gateways in New Zealand, it seems like the nearest POP is in Australia. I have been under the impression that my Starlink IP Address is assigned by the POP, not the Gateway. However, for you that would not explain getting a US IP address. Let me know what you find on the linked website above. -
Magnetic mount?

I am successfully using the Ridgeline Mount on a metal roof. The ballast weights provided weight about 80-90 pounds and are in four blocks that are installed individually after the mount is placed. -
Looking for opinions on PTP and router setup
RicochetStarlink replied to freejay's topic in 3rd Party Routers
Having previously used Ubiquiti's equipment, this looks about right. However, I would make two suggestions. 1. Definitely use good power protection for all plug-in devices. No, not a surge protector and not even a $45 BackUps battery backup. Invest in a good battery backup system that always provides power from the battery's pure sine wave (e.g., never directly from the incoming 110-volt A/C signal). This will extend the life of your equipment by years... literally. 2. Make sure that both of your Nanostations are properly grounded. I am not talking about using a grounded power outlet. I mean that you should buy a copper ground rod and copper ground wire sufficient to provide proper ground to your Nanostations. This will protect them in the event of a lightning strike. Thanks! -
@Cosma, I have no idea what the details are of the networking for these Dahua cameras. The only thing I can think of the might be an issue is Starlink's use of Carrier-Grade Network Address Translation (CG-NAT). CG-NAT can make it difficult (impossible?) to access devices on your Starlink WiFi network. However, if CG-NAT were the problem here, I would expect it to affect both cameras. You might want to take your question to a Dahua camera forum. Perhaps someone there has figured out how to get these cameras working with Starlink. Thanks!
